Doctors cave beach is Montego Bay’s most popular beach for tourists. It is well kept, and has well-kept amenities that other publics beaches such as Walter fletcher and especially one man beach lacks, but to be fair one man beach is technically a fish sanctuary and not a public beach. The most appreciated amenity is the well-kept bathrooms/change rooms/showers. Umbrellas and beach chairs aplenty are available for rental.
The History of Doctors cave can be traced back to 1906 at that time Dr. Alexander James McCatty gave permission/donated the property to be used as a bathing club. Access to the beach was gained via a cave who opening has since been covered. The beach is famous for it alleged mineral water spots.
A tour guide will be sure to point to dark blue spot in the water where it is said that these spots are extra warm is thought to have healing properties. This claim was first made by Sir Herbert Barker, a famous British Osteopath in the 1920’s. The beach today serves tourists and locals alike. The Sandbar restaurant and bar serves up popular tropical beverages and treats. There is even a Starbucks coffee shop. Doctor’s cave is also popular for its reef and attracts a lot of snorkelers.
Overall this is a great beach to visit. One of the downside to the beach however is that it is most times overcrowded and beach and umbrellas are often seen fighting for space on the beach. Like most of the beach areas in Montego Bay and indeed the country it is very small. The larger hotels having taken the best areas for themselves. In a nutshell doctors cave beach is a safe, scenic beach to visit. You can spend the day relaxing in a protected care free environment.
